Tooth Whitening

Tooth colour will vary from person to person - just like hair and skin colour. There are a number of ways that teeth can be made to look whiter if they become discoloured. One is teeth whitening.

As you grow older your teeth can become darker naturally. Tooth decay, fillings and tartar build-up can also contribute to discolouration. There are many reasons why your teeth can become discoloured. Teeth become discoloured for many reasons.

Teeth have nerves and blood vessels inside them. If these nerves and blood vessels are damaged the tooth may become darker (this can happen because of decay, or if the teeth are knocked).

Many people develop yellowish staining on their teeth simply because of age. Coffee, tea, red wine, and cigarette smoke yellow the teeth. Certain medications can also cause the teeth to become gray. Even the natural act of aging affects the colour of teeth.

Discoloured teeth can make people feel insecure about their appearance. Sometimes to the extent that they are reluctant to smile, refuse to appear on photographs, or even feel uneasy about laughing at a joke.

People have been bleaching their teeth for more than a hundred years. The results, however, have not been great. With today's technology, teeth whitening have become an effective way to remove discolouration and stains to the teeth.

All tooth whitening procedures use hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide to bleach out stains on your tooth enamel.

Tooth whitening techniques will vary with every individual depending on the following:

  • the peroxide concentrate in the whitening gel
  • the type of stain on our teeth
  • the intensity of the light activating the whitening gel
  • the amount of time the whitening gel is used
  • where the stain is located.

The final result differs between individuals, but during your consultation, you will be told what you personally should expect.
